The Challenges for LGBT Businesses

People often ask why introduce LGBT politics into business practices anyway? I don’t care about sexualities they say.

First and foremost the recognition of LGBT business leaders is aspirational. Just as many members of our community have found strength in cultural icons, this is also possible in the business world. 

As an individual, confidence often comes as a result of personal experience, but sometimes the example of someone else’s confidence can be beneficial to use. Seeing that someone else can succeed gives us confidence that we can succeed.

Showing people that they can achieve what they aspire to, whoever they are, is surely vital to ensuring that people live happier, more fulfilling lives?

Secondly, the presence of openly LGBT leaders has a normalising factor. 

Today many business people within the LGBT community face interrogation and judgement in a way that heterosexuals do not.

When male entrepreneurs are asked about their sexuality by investors it’s rarely to discover if they’re heterosexual. Furthermore, this kind of questioning rarely has any relevance to the potential success of a business. At best it’s a rude form of curiosity, at worst, functional bigotry.

Groups like the National Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce provide many resources to the community’s businesspeople. This is an essential part of allowing people to feel comfortable undertaking a new business venture without having to worry about constant suspicion or judgement around who you are.

LGBT businesses are just businesses. They deal with EBITDA and year on year projections like any other business. But here, today, they also serve another function, to inspire others.

Ultimately, the business world is a foundational part of our society. While businesses are often ahead of authorities when it comes to societal change, there are still challenges faced by LGBT businesspeople. 

Creating a place like LGBT.best means a place where businesses can thrive on the merits of their ideas and the quality of their execution rather than the inner life of the owners or employees of those businesses. Where they can connect with the community and connect with customers from all walks of life.
